Between 100 and 150 million years ago the stunning landscape of the Pyrenees was formed by the intense pressure created by present day Spain pushing against France uplifting the Earthís crust. The resultant mountain range now plays host to a wealth wonders, both natural and man made.
One of the most famous of these is the Cirque de Gavarnie, an awe inspiring glacial amphitheatre with a breathtaking waterfall. The true natural beauty of the area is preserved in the national parks of Ordesa and Mont Perdido, Aiguestortes and the Pyrenean National Park all accessible to the public. The Spanish Pyrenees boasts the highest peak, Aneto (3404m) whilst Vignemale is Franceís highest peak in the Pyrenees and the dramatic setting for the beautiful Lake Gaube.
Evidence of manís habitation stretches back to prehistoric times and can be seen at world renowned caves including Grotte de Gargas, famous for its hand prints and the numerous paintings at Niaux. Intriguing Cathar castles await, including Roquefixade, enjoying impressive views over the valley and Montsegur, where the Cathar religion was finally extinguished. The ancient cathedral at Saint Bertrand de Comminges dominates the landscape for miles around and is well worth visiting for its dramatic setting and the ornate wood carvings on the choir stalls.
In the summer, ride the Little Artouste Train for spectacular panoramic views over the Ossau Mountains or visit the Eagle keep at the restored 11th century Beaucens castle where there are almost 50 species of bird of prey to admire ranging from barn owls to king vultures.
Why not finish off your visit by shopping at one of the many markets that abound. Those at Foix and Mirepoix are highly regarded and provide a great place to make those holiday remembrance purchases or gifts for those back home.
