With a wide range of rivers to choose from, some of the best and most invigorating white water river pursuits can be enjoyed across the Pyrenees. The rivers are at their most ferocious in early spring as the melt waters flow off the peaks.

Rafting. Take a thrilling ride down one of the many suitable rivers flowing through the Pyrenees. We list numerous activity providers throughout the Pyrenees who offer tuition and the equipment to check out this adrenalin fuelled sport. The Noguera Pallaresa in Spain is a mecca for European rafters but numerous other areas offer equally good facilities and epic white water. Check out any from the Aude , Ariege , Salat , Aure , Louron , Gave de Pau, Ossau and Aspe in France and the Aragon and Gallego rivers in Spain.

Canyoning Why bother with a boat? Don your wetsuit and take to the water for a mix of jumping down waterfalls and wading through rivers. Some routes just need an ability to swim whilst others require helmets, ropes and even some abseiling skills. The principle canyoning centre is in the Sierra de Guara in Spain and for France try the Gave de Pau in Haute Pyrenees, the high Ariège or the Gorge de Galamus in the Aude.

Canoe and kayak An excellent area for kayaking and canoeing, the Pyrenees has a multitude of rivers ideal to follow your sport. Try the Noguera Pallaresa or Gallego in Spain or the Gave d’Oloron, Gave de Pau, Ariege or Garonne in France. The waters can be challenging and the scenery spectacular.

Pot Holing The Pyrenees has some of the most celebrated and historic caves in the world. Not for the claustrophobic, guided pot holing can take you into an underworld labyrinth unlike anything above ground.

Fishing There are some excellent fishing spots to try out either in breathtaking mountain lakes or in one of the numerous rivers. Make sure you get your licence (carte de pêche for France or Licencia de pesca for Spain) and know the season and catch limits. Local fishing tackle shops and the tourist offices are good sources of local information. The Gave d’Oloron is one of France’s main Salmon rivers whilst the many tributaries running off the Pyrenees such as the River Ourse provide a tranquil setting.
