A lattice of forest trails, bridle paths and livestock tracks weave their way across the vast Pyrenees Mountain range making this area the perfect choice for equestrians.

This traditional sport continues to gain ground and become a favourite tourists choice for an adventure holiday. Strengthened by its natural links with eco-tourism more and more stables are opening up to provide horse riding and pony trekking packages to suit all riders.

The most popular riding can normally be found in the foothills, where there are plenty of stables available offering beginner and intermediate courses. For more advanced riders the high mountain trails provide that real sense of adventure; as eagles and vultures soar overhead you can ride through wild gorges, along wooded ridges and across rugged high pastures.

For a traditional ride in the Pyrenees then the classic mount of the high mountains is the native, stocky Merenguais, a breed well adapted for the terrain. Ariege is one place to ride these horses, in The Ax Valley or Aulus-les-Bains in The Couserans.
