The small city of Canillo holds the pre-eminent position as first in the official hierarchy of Andorran cities according to the ‘Carta of consecration of the cathedral of Seu d’Urgell’, the Spanish cathedral city whose bishop shares the title of head of state for Andorra along with the French President.

Canillo has maintained its local importance throughout the centuries due to its large territory and high Pyrenean status for good sheep pastures and cattle grazing. Nowadays it is the winter tourism that dominates. Canillo itself is home to the ice-palace; an impressive sports complex providing an Olympic size skating rink and swimming pool as well as numerous tennis, squash courts and sauna.

In summer the surrounding Vall d’Incles provides some lovely walking amongst the picturesque landscape; dotted with shepherd huts characterizing the areas historic past. The modern sanctuary of nearby Meritxell and the medieval ‘San Joan de Caselles’ chapel, one of the finest Roman buildings across Andorra are of cultural importance and worth a visit.

In winter the Canillo ski sector of El Forn forms part of the Grandvalira ski domain, one of the largest ski domains in Europe with an extensive piste network and first class facilities. Although linked to Grandvalira through the El tarter sector, El Forn provides a sheltered, tranquil sector secluded from the main ski domain and therefore ideal for beginners and families alike.
