The ski station of Gourette is conveniently located only 60km from Pau airport and is therefore one of the most accessible ski resorts in France. The small, modern airport at Pau efficiently deals with incoming passengers making Gourette an excellent destination for even a weekend ski or snowboard break.

Most of the 90 hectares of ski slopes are north facing ensuring good snow quality and the entire domain is accessible to anyone reasonably competent. The red rated Pène Blanque starts at the high point of 2400m and offers a thrilling descent to the ski resort some 950m below.

A 1km long boardercross is a recent addition with 12 bends dropping over a distance of nearly 400 m and the Snowpark now boasts a succession of jumps, landing platforms, slide bars and a freestyle chalet. A 2.4km snowshoe trail has also been created through the forest connecting the resort to the Bézou plateau.

For beginners, the Bézou sector is perfect, a separate area away from the Pène Blanque and Cotch sectors specifically equipped for beginners with ski lifts and travelators to enable you to get the hang of things with total peace of mind.

An impressive investment program recently has led to Gourette providing some ultra-modern equipment including the 10-seater Bézou gondola lift, the 4-seater Pitchoun ski lift, the Plaa-Ségouna detachable 6-seater ski lift and the Anglas ski lift. These 4 lifts alone are capable of transporting 9600 skiers per hour ensuring lift queues are minimal. Further investment in snow cannons and water tanks also means that the pistes above 1400m are now guaranteed for snow during the season.

For a low-key resort Gourette enjoys some great après-ski. There are numerous restaurants, a nightclub that opens late and parties well into the morning and a casino with a fine restaurant just 8km away for those who wish to gamble. At nearby Eaux-Bonnes the recently modernized spa facilities provide welcome relief for tired and aching muscles.

In the summer months, Gourette Eaux-Bonnes hosts a number of leisure activities including tennis, via ferrata, a hanging forest and the thermal spa centre. The surrounding Ossau valley is well renowned for its natural beauty rich in mountain lakes, delightful villages and spectacular landscapes. There are plentiful marked hiking trails to occupy mountain bikers and walkers whilst road cyclists can endure the infamous col d’Aubisque.

For rock climbers the Pic du Midi d’Ossau provides one of the great Pyrenean ascents. At 2884m ‘Jean-Pierre’ (as it is known locally) is not one of the highest peaks in the range but sits in isolated splendour and presents a challenging summit.
