The captivating French department of the Aude drives a wedge between Ariege to the west and Pyrenees Orientales to the east to claim its corner of the French Pyrenees mountain range at the beautifully scenic Pays de Sault. This high plateau between the Cathar town of Quillan and the spa town of Ax-Les-Thermes is home to 17 villages nestled amongst the vast swathes of giant pine forests.

The Pays de Sault is defined as two high plateaus. The 'Petit Plateau' reaches a height of 1934 metres at the Ourtizet peak. The neighbouring 'Grand Plateau' is dominated by the Tabe massif peaks of Saint-Barthélemy (2368m) and Soularac (2348m) set amongst magnificent pine forests providing scenic walks amongst the giant fir trees, plentiful shaded picnic stops and numerous mountain bike trails. The Rébenty valley dissects the two plateaus and provides numerous fishing spots along its river banks.

To contrast the shaded beauty of the pine forests the viewpoint at Pas de l'ours provides spectacular plunging views over the Gorges de la Frau. Not just a natural wonder the Gorges provides the historic Cathar trail joining Montaillou, with its beautiful Cathar castle with Montségur, the last bastion of the Cathars.

In winter, the Pays de Sault provides the Aude's only ski resort at Camurac. An ideal family ski resort taking full advantage of the magnificent setting you can enjoy 14 pistes made up of 4 green, 6 blue, 2 red and 2 black runs. To break up your ski week you can even take a snow shoe outing or try the 14km of cross country skiing.
